ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the modern influence of gender upon nonverbal communication including opposite-sex couples, same-sex couples, and friendships.Men are stereotyped as active, dominant, aggressive, and insensitive persons who dominate communicative interaction by virtue of their superior status. By contrast, women are perceived stereotypically to be passive, submissive, supportive persons who are dominated asaresult of their desire to adapt to men’s needs, and to be accommodating. Further, many stereotypes of gender are heteronormative. Gender’s role in persuasion is also explored.
