ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the power of interpersonal space and how it functions in relationships, at work, and in the business context. The chapter provides definitional parameters, expectations, and violations of those expected distance norms. This “invisible” phenomenon has profound implications for communication we have with others. Proxemic communication functions include impression management, persuasion, affiliation, and privacy. The four proxemics zones are intimate, personal, social, and public space.
