ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the power of the voice and the impressions we create for others. The voice serves three main functions: emotion, impression management, and conversation regulation. The semantics of voice includes loudness, pitch, rate, duration, quality, regularity, articulation,pronunciation, and silence. Image dimensions of the voice are competence, interpersonal attractiveness, and dominance. The VMST, Vocalic Meaning Sensitivity Task is explored.
