ABSTRACT

Thetwentiethcenturyhasbeenmarkedbyaseriesofstimulantabuseepidemics, withcocaineandamphetaminegenerallyalternatinginpopularity.Beginninginthe 1880s,thesetwodrugshavesharedrepeatedcyclesofpraisefollowedbyuniversal condemnationasdelightintheirpositive,mood-alteringeffectshasbeenreplaced byevidenceoftheirsubstantialtoxicity.Thisreviewbrieflysummarizestheir effectsinhumans.Morecomprehensivediscussionsofthisliteraturecanbefound inanumberofrecentreviews(e.g.JohansonandFischman,1989;Fischman,1987; KozelandAdams,1985;Grabowski,1984).
