ABSTRACT

At the University of Cambridge Department of

Architecture, I ran graduate design studios based in

London, Istanbul, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth,

and in Hemel Hempstead New Town. The studio

looked at the role of architectural creativity in

the context of very large-scale planning and the

interaction of design with political and economic

dynamics. John Tuomey, a visiting critic to the studio,

memorably described what we were seeking to

accomplish as ‘thinking big, but in a particular way’.
