Narrative is a literary form in which a narrative attitude is structure-carrying, the other two major attitudes being an existential attitude, or the expression of an immediate state of being and a gestural attitude, which constitutes itself by staged or stageable language. The essential property of gestural language is the very absence of the presentational process. The attitude of story reading has as its essence the distinction between the stratum of the presented world and that of its presentational process, each of which is made up of features of space, time, acts and events, personae, atmospheric qualities, stated ideas, and an abstractable work ideology. Within this general attitude specific distinctions between non-fictional and various fictional modes can be drawn according to: the inter-relationship between their seven strata, various modes of deformalization and appresentation, the horizonal qualities of presented world and presentational process, and the graded relationship between the deformalized and appresented fictional worlds.
