ABSTRACT
The implications of an argument in favour of historical criticism arc not simply that more critics should be historical. Historical criticism even at its best has fallen far short of what it aspires to be, and its shortcomings have no doubt much to do with its seeming to be less necessary than it really is. What is needed is deliberate and steady access to historical criticism of a kind we have so far had rarely and by accident.
