ABSTRACT

In this chapter, some of the weaknesses and challenges in the implementation of regulations on fracking have been reiterated to discuss them in the context of its implications on individuals’ lives in those communities impacted by it. Attention has been drawn to the mixed outcomes of communities opposition to this unconventional drilling procedure and its impact on the state’s regulatory climate, if any. With the oil and gas industry yet to internalize the social costs of production and individuals in communities still opposing it, there seems to exist the need to investigate the scope of partnerships and collaborations. Perhaps they can offer a platform for a meaningful dialog among stakeholders with competing interests and reach a consensus on regulatory policy options. They could even encourage state and local governments to bring about changes in oil and gas companies’ behavior by making them accept social responsibilities that will also help them reduce community opposition.
