ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to adapt the defining characteristics of a vernacular building to multifamily housing because it is only by building more densely that one can hope to reinvigorate cities and their surrounding communities. The vernacular is the closest approach that one have to a truly sustainable construction method and with it comes a much more environmentally responsible and healthy lifestyle than current one. Vernacular structures are the result of builders accommodating climatic conditions, carefully using locally obtained materials, and satisfying basic functional needs efficiently and economically. This approach to climate would involve living more attuned with nature and solving the challenges it presents through passive construction and energy strategies. Orientation to the sun and control of it lead the package of passive techniques. The vernacular builders seek efficiencies of space, as that is the best technique for saving time, money, and resources.
