ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the research examining the factors determining bike share usage levels. Factors related to safety and convenience emerged as the strongest encouragement factors. A combination of factors influencing transport decisions in general will have an impact on bike share. A study conducted between 2012 and 2013 found some significant differences between those signed up as bike share members and those who had not, but lived in a city with bike share. The logistic regression results are used to predict how changing variable values alter the odds of bike share membership. Bike share membership probabilities rise from 0.36 to 0.86 from the lowest to highest income level. The differences in safety perceptions between bike share members and non-members when presented with different levels of infrastructure provision provide insights for bicycle infrastructure planners and those seeking to encourage bike share use.
