ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issues associated with the parking of dockless bike share bikes and opportunities to minimise the negative impact they can have on public realm outcomes. In mid-2017, due to the rapid advancement of dockless bike share systems in hundreds of cities across the globe, a study was conducted on the parking-related issues associated with dockless bike share. City officials revealed that little or no communication had been initiated by dockless bike share operators prior to the launch of dockless bike share. A number of local governments have expressed concern regarding the quality of bike provided by dockless bike share companies. For many cities, dockless bike share may be the only option available, due to a lack of funds for more expensive docked bike share. A promotional clip may need to be developed by government, in conjunction with bike share operators, highlighting how to use dockless bike share appropriately, particularly in terms of parking behaviour.
