ABSTRACT

Trevor appeared to be one of life's misfits. He was a very slow and reluctant learner; he caused disruption in class by his rudeness and his unwillingness to engage in anything any teacher wanted him to do, and generally proved himself to be lacking in any practical, physical, or academic skills. Neurons are linked together in numerous patterned networks, creating massive, complex, interconnected, functional systems. They provide human beings with unique collections of capabilities and abilities. The nervous, endocrine, and immune systems are so interconnected that new and remembered experiences can affect and alter the physical and behavioral processes of people's bodies. Surface-pleasure feelings are trivial titillations, quick fixes, or immediate gratifications like fast food, fads, or "gimmick" solutions to problems that do not address root causes. In an educational context, the responsibility of the teacher is to carefully consider and set appropriate challenges that are intrinsically interesting to students and to encourage and guide students toward meeting them.
