ABSTRACT

One aspect of the sociolinguistic enterprise that can be fruitfully analyzed using a cognitive framework is the semi-guided interview, conceived as a discourse scenario composed of perspective schemas. Perspective schemas are dynamic models that highlight the nature, area, strength and direction of the attention of a particular interview participant. These perspective schemas include perception areas and foci receiving priority attention. Perception areas and priority attention foci may vary according to the participant structure of the interview and the presence of other interactive elements. Although we have already learned much about the perceptual dynamics of the interview using these perspective schemas, it is possible to know still more by moving beyond the overview provided in the previous chapter and toward details of its perceptual micro-dynamics. It is to this level of internal dynamism that we now turn our attention.
