ABSTRACT

Santiago Solano Rincón lifted himself to an upright position from the overstuffed couch in his Bogotá living room. It was well after 10 p.m. on a weekday night, but Christmas vacation had begun, and there were no bedtimes, just a lot of television. A documentary was beginning to be aired about the massacre at the Palace of Justice in 1985, and I started to explain what had happened there. “You don’t need to tell me what happened,” Santiago, then 11 years old, protested. “I saw it all on Pablo Escobar, el patrón del mal [Pablo Escobar, the Druglord]” (Figure 6.1).
