ABSTRACT

Chapter 1, titled “Experience and Education,” highlights the influences in Ian McHarg’s early life that informed his later professional career. This brief biography includes his apprenticeship in Glasgow, Scotland under the auspices of the architect Donald A. Wintersgill; his military experiences in World War II and his enrollment in a military correspondence course on town planning developed by the planner Jacquelyn Tyrwhitt; his studies in landscape architecture and city planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and his contribution to a collaborative thesis project on the redevelopment of Providence, Rhode Island; his marriage to Pauline Crena de Iongh and their road trip in the summer of 1949 to see the landscape of the United States.
