ABSTRACT

Philosophers suggest lots of diff erent criteria with regard to what makes someone a person: rationality, self-awareness, creativity, autonomy/free will, moral agency – the ability to make moral decisions, a being that can form relationships, a being that possesses rights and responsibilities. A precise defi nition of what makes a person is beyond the scope of this book, but the key point is this: persons are diff erent from anything else in the world; they are extraordinary and we are persons!
