ABSTRACT

Sam is a young, conscientious teacher. In addition to after school revision classes, she runs a lunchtime club one day a week. On those days it is not unusual for Sam to get to 3:30 p.m. and discover that she has not eaten since breakfast. On another day one week, she is invited to a ‘working lunch’ by a senior manager who is keen to get staff ideas on an aspect of policy. Having eaten half a sandwich and a piece of quiche, she races down the corridor so as not to be late for her fi rst lesson after lunch. Refl ecting later in the day, she realises that not only do SLT members never come into the staff room at lunch, but she had never even seen one of them eat anything.
