ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the nature of work and fun. Hard fun is about challenges, goals, achievement and mastery. Our days are spent engaging in a variety of pursuits. Some activity is its own reward, whilst we need a caffeine jolt, words of encouragement. Work is the most common activity requiring financial reward. Money is required to buy food, a home, clothing, healthcare and comforts, so we work. Labour is wearisome, whilst play is engaging. In addition, it would seem, taking part in it also makes us more interesting to others. Remove payment was no longer labour. Call centres are often the main point of interaction between companies and their customers after a purchase has been made. They have become synonymous with frustration. They can also be rewarded with cash incentives and free calls. Selfless labour for the benefit of the group should resonate with anyone who has played their part by working hard on their aspect of a wider project.
