ABSTRACT

Games allow us to escape the tedium of today through a future of galactic battles or a mythical past of dragon slaying. In these realms, reality is replaced with fantasy, the daily grind with exhilaration, the nuance and complexity of life with a quick and easy video game fix. In fact, this is why gamers game. No one would, in the manner of a fourteenth-century knife sharpener bending over their work, put their nose to the grindstone for fun. Each point along the way, each minor victory and cause for celebration, is just the same. A completed project, a successful meeting, a well-crafted document are all preceded by effort, by graft. And often lots of it. Grinding called treadmilling, describes gaming activity that's repetitive or, in itself, uninteresting and uninspiring. The Fogg Behavior Model includes the notion of an activation threshold. When an individual has sufficient ability and motivation, then a trigger will lead to the target behaviour.
