ABSTRACT

Moderate breezes & fair weather with a large Swell from the North. The Wind came from 1 the same quarter which enabled us to weather the Rocks & Reef off the North point of the Island having a strong current setting to Windward. The Island we found to trend in the direction of S60°W for 6 or 8 miles & we had great overfalls in this situation having unequal Soundings & a strong Stream setting to windward which occasion’d a great Sea. After passing thro’ the Race (it may be call’d) we had the wind to the eastward of the North which carried us over to the Corean Coast by Sunset, having run in the direction of N41°W 22 miles, when the extremes bore from N20°E to S67°W, an Opening in a NW direction 2 about 3 miles, the Island of Tzima South to S23°E & we had 60 fathoms water. The Night was moderate & we plied under an easy Sail. At Daylight we found a strong current had set us to the ENE and we made Sail to the WSW. As we approach’d the Land we perceiv’d several Villages scatter’d along the Shore which appear’d much broken & likely to afford Shelter altho’ its external View presented rather an inhospitable prospect. We also saw some Fishing Boats to Seaward. At Noon we had no Observation but our situation nearly the same as last Evening. We had Cloudy & Rainy weather with an Easterly Wind.
