ABSTRACT
A transcription error for Oaitipeha Bay the bay to the west of Pointe Tatatua on the southeastern part of Tahiti; Baie de Tautira, also known as Cook Anchorage. Broughton uses the Tahitian morae instead of the Hawaiian heiau for the Astronomer to ascertain the rates of the Watches. Lieutenant Young of the Marines with a Corporal and Privates commanded the Party for their Protection. On the 18th of January the author Saluted Britannic Majesty and the Weather became more favorable for the Astronomer's Observations. The Ground being Tabooed no Persons were permitted to come within the Limits exclusive of the Priests belonging to the Morai. The Surf seldom permitted our Boats to Land in which we found no inconveniency from the good Harmony that subsisted between us & the Natives who readily furnished us with Canoes that prov'd a most safe conveyance.
