ABSTRACT

The Natives answer'd to the description given by the Russian navigator Spanberg, who visited an Island in Latitude 4350N Ostrov Shpanberga. They were prevented as much as was possible by the Japanese officers from having any intercourse with them, and were instantly driven away. They were cover'd with [a] Variety of Oceanic Birds & the Sea seem'd equally well stor'd with Whales. Land now appear'd to the NE'ward Ostrov Shpanberga, known to the Japanese as Shikotan To. & the authors alter'd their course to NEbE. By Noon they were nearly abreast of several Rocks detach'd from the low flat land Ostrov Poloskogo, known to the Japanese as Taraku To. & to which they were connected by a reef. To the North we saw high land Probably the NE end of Ostrov Kunashir though they cou'd not ascertain the continuation of the coast and some nearer to them bore from N15E to N40E.
