ABSTRACT

Benyowsky was born in Verb, Hungary, in 1746. His involvement in politics resulted in his exile to Kamchatka, from where, assisted by others, he made his escape by capturing the Sv Petr and in her visited a number of places in eastern waters before reaching Macau. Soon after Noon the Gale moderated & having agreed with a Chinese Pilot to carry us to Macao for 30 Dollars got under way and at Sunset or 6 PM came too again in 13 fathoms amongst the Islands. In the Typa Harbor at the time of Broughton's visit the Typa was an important anchorage for Macau, between the islands of Taipa, 1 miles south of Macau and the Island of Coloana, 1 mile farther SSW. By 1834, the Typa had shoaled to such an extent that it was no longer usable as an anchorage w[h]ere Lord Anson refitted after his Voyage in the South Seas with frequent accidents to Ships in European Seas.
