ABSTRACT

In essence, only an airplane with a new power plant and fuel system design could burn a wholly new fuel. Aviation technology evolved over a long time and in some cases various conclusions and strategic decisions occurred at different stages for reasons that do not now pertain. The gas turbine engine was not by any means a novel concept, but a workable scheme waited for Frank Whittle and then Hans-Joachim Pabst von Ohain, who worked independently and developed the engine separately. It was seen as the solution to many problems. To introduce the use of a new fuel would require not just newly designed engines and systems, but designs that catered for new assumptions. Again, if we achieved commitment to that project, it would be many years before we saw the introduction of such aircraft and many more yearsstretching to decadesbefore the fleet was built out in that new way.
