ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the business and intellectual property law. Corporate design includes a large number of legal matters, starting with the types of business formation; the ethical basis upon which it is to operate; the legalities relating to business transactions; and intellectual property law. A new body of legislation has now appeared relating to the internet with domain names, content and online transactions. Intellectual property law relates to the commercial rights of using our intellect and skills to create a design. Moral rights are concerned with protecting the personality and reputation of authors, rather than the economic rights of intellectual property law. Intellectual property law has been revisited and updated as trademarks, patents and industrial form become more relevant as sales expand worldwide through website advertising. In conclusion, business and design legislation within the UK have a long history but both have had to cater for an increasing number of occurrences that have arisen because of the internet.
