ABSTRACT

Identities and personal theologies alike are the children of a basic human quest for meaning. The higher-order beliefs and values comprising personal theologies are at some of the broadest levels of abstraction. Indeed, the work of the individual in constructing personal theologies is not unique to what is currently called a pluralistic postmodern world. The primary assumption of many pastoral theologians is that individuals indeed have and use personal theologies. Like Jennifer, and like Jewish agnostic Adriana, Christopher and Philip revealed deep reflection on their beliefs and values, and articulated clear thoughts about their personal theologies. This commitment gave unmistakable shape to his clearly articulated and thoughtful personal theology. Cory remained devoted to his Mormon religious tradition, attending an average of two services a month as well as intensive Seminary Mormon classes for teenagers and young adults. Agnosticism should not be confused with lack of interest in or consideration of theological matters.
