ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an example of where and how the authors met each young adult who agreed to participate in an onsite interview. It shows the typical flow of conversation as the authors worked through their interview questions, and it reveals how interviewers were able to elicit greater depth of responses even from young adults who had never been asked questions directly about different facets of their personal theologies. This interview with Rebecca in particular also offers a glimpse into an American way of life that is becoming less common in early young adulthood. A few more questions followed about relationships, drawn from a Gallup study of beliefs about marriage. Then the conversation shifted to the questions tapping into personal theology. In many ways, the interview with Rebecca was typical of the interviews the authors conducted over the course of this phase of the "Making the Transition" study.
