ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes many teachers were enthusiastic about the use of museums as an educational resource. Most teachers recognise the importance of taking their pupils out of the classroom and into other learning environments. In addition, the HMI team felt that all students would benefit from being given a basic collection of material which included a bibliography, ideas for planning learning from objects and museum displays. Museum staff report that teachers are more confident and expect more from museums, as their knowledge and understanding of how museums can be used increases. Schools are broadening and deepening the way they use museums, getting involved in longer term relationships and projects. Museum education staff provides good work sessions, but organisation, preparation and follow-up are all in the hands of the teacher.
