ABSTRACT

Most museum work tends to be at the active end of the scale and is, therefore, likely to make more of an impact than text based classroom work. The study of history is probably the major reason for school groups visiting museums. There are three distinct elements to cross-curricular links, all of which are pulled to the fore of any work done in museums. First concerns the aspects of education that are relevant to all pupils no matter what their ability or interest. Second element concerns the skills that are relevant to all subjects such as oracy, numeracy and literacy. Third element relates to more specific aspects of life beyond school such as careers guidance, health, citizenship, and economic and environmental understanding. All museums are educational resources in the broadest sense of the word. Visiting museums is very important for language development. Taking pupils out of school and introducing them to other aspects of their cultural environment.
