ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some of the features of Argentina's debt that are of particular importance for the subsequent legal analysis. It concentrates on the time that is of particular relevance for Argentina's still ongoing debt crisis that is the period that starts with the beginning of the latest military regime in 1976 and continues into present times. Indeed, many argue that the brutality of the regime and its economic policies cannot be regarded as two separate features of the latest military dictatorship, but that political oppression and torture were instead two sides of the same coin, in that the latter were necessary means for making possible the economic policies pursued by that regime. The process of excessive lending and borrowing that took place while the military regime was in power also needs to be seen in the context of the world financial situation.
