ABSTRACT

The finding that is shown time and time again in the different studies is that the interpretation of qualitative uncertainty statements into numbers is problematic and differs highly between individuals. This has been captured in the preference paradox which states that people like to give qualitative uncertainty statements such as "probable" but like to receive numerical probability statements such as "70 per cent". Another way to assess the degree of uncertainty is the clustering of words and phrases that indicate uncertainty. This means that need to convert expert assessments of a situation which are often given in qualitative uncertainty statements into numbers so that decision makers and managers can use them in their assessment. This chapter discusses the Weasel words are intended to make a statement sound more legitimate and impressive. Weasels are animals that are believed to take their nutrition from other animals' eggs.
