ABSTRACT

Black metal has been blamed for reviving pagan, anti-Christian sentiments; spreading racist, anti-Semite, and homophobic propaganda; and fostering hate crimes. Black metal is probably the most highly contested genre within global metal. Alongside political and ideological controversy, black metal has also provoked widespread ridicule and laughter. The emergence of Scandinavian black metal coincided with the commercial success of mainstream metal, which many young die-hard listeners denounced as a sellout to the masses. Norwegian black metal happened to become a global role model. At the time of the Norwegian church burnings, Turkish black metal was still in its infancy. Mayhem's only recording, the 1987 Deathcrush EP released by Norwegian Poser corpse Music, was not officially available in the Turkish market. The usage of satanic and anti-religious symbols is a common practice in global black metal. A black metal band that stands out for its attempt to merge anti-Christian and anti-Islamic symbols is Satanized from Istanbul.
