ABSTRACT

Communication is often considered to be an indicator of team virtuality which may be estimated as a percent of a team member's communication with other project team members that is accomplished using electronic media in a typical week. Virtual teams often do not come about as the outcome of a planned progression of team development or project design. The success of self-disclosure events in the virtual work setting is often dependent upon the contractual agreement between organizations. The project involved several dependent projects involving teams from different areas of the company working in different geographical regions. The process requires a clear understanding of the social boundaries present in the situation which may be hard to discern in a geographically dispersed work team. Socialization through effective communication is necessary for team members to build a team identity and form that important bond of concern among members to strengthen trust.
