ABSTRACT

Virtual teams are often described in literature, and studied in recent research, as offshore teams brought together by managers for a short period of rapid activity designed to focus on a well defined goal. Virtual team is any team that relies upon electronic communications and technical media as the primary means of communications and data access, and does not regularly meet face to face. Work place performance is affected by access to social media, both in positive as well as negative ways. Performance, according to Whetten and Cameron, is a quotient of ability and motivation, and ability the quotient of aptitude, training, and resources, while motivation is the quotient of desire and commitment. Maslow provides motivational theory in a graphical representation of unsatisfied needs in a hierarchical pyramid. Herzberg compliments Maslow with the theory of hygiene factors in motivational theory seeking to explain the de-motivation.
