The Chinese pharmaceutical market was worth $66.7 billion in 2011 and it was by then the third biggest in the world. Currently public expenditure on healthcare is low: some 2.7 per cent of GDP is spent on healthcare. India has an even bigger population than China. But so far the national pharmaceutical market has reached only thirteenth rank; in 2011 it was worth some $14.3 billion. India has gained a strong reputation for the development and manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). The Brazilian pharmaceutical market was worth $29.9 billion in 2011 and was ranked the tenth biggest in the world. IMS forecast it to rise to fourth biggest by 2016. According to IMS the Russian pharmaceutical market was worth $29.9 billion in 2011 and was ranked eleventh biggest in the world. It is forecast to rise to ninth ranking by 2016.
