ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study of operation of a special purpose machine and learning design, which is concerned with the analysis and training preparation associated with the introduction of a special purpose packaging machine. Details of the machine will only be included if they are relevant to the analysis. The training thinking associated with the machine and its environment and the relevance of the problem to broad training policy will be emphasised. The high overall score left little doubt of the high priority for training. In this case the need for training was also clearly recognised by the manufacturer of the machine. The basic craft need was clear from the start and the need for diagnostic skill gave another dimension to the problem. Although of major importance, the craft elements did not present the greatest difficulties of recognition of need. The progress of the training made it possible to look much more deeply into related organisational problems.
