ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the structure in today's Third Generation Leadership world must be based on something other than simply efficiency of operations and lines of control the model encountered by Eric in the anecdote. For Third Generation Leadership to operate, the environment in which leaders operate and of which they are a key part for others must be conducive to actually being a 3G Leader. The purpose of structure as nominated by Jaques is to ensure that people at any level are able to provide a clear value-added component to what is done by others. Third Generation Leadership results in a different approach across the entire organisation and, from this, it brings about a significantly different organisation structure, marketing approach and means of assessing performance. In the Third Generation Leadership world the traditional lines of power and authority, together with the traditional distinction and exercise of management and leadership behaviours, are no longer appropriate.
