ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses on constructive Christian theological response to this challenging question, the so-called 'problem of evil'. Theodicyor engagement with the reality of evil and God's relationship to evillies was at the center of Balthasar's theology of the Trinity. A Christian cannot accept atheism as the final word. The author endorses the programmatic statement of Walter Cardinal Kasper. Many today regard the whole practice of theodicy with great suspicion. Even if self-contradiction cannot be proven, does argument from evil demonstrate that God's existence is implausible or unworthy, Balthasar's theology of the Trinity constitutes a coherent and compelling Christian theodicy. The Cross of Jesus Christ is ultimate historical expression of God's Triune nature. Suffering, by the grace of salvation offered to humanity by Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Son becomes a participation in the Trinity and is thus ultimately transformed by the Triune God into joy.
