ABSTRACT

It is noteworthy to mention that the July 1966 event was allegedly conceived by some politicians from the upper Niger. It was subsequently executed primarily as a revolt in the army by some officers and men from the upper Niger and directed at their Igbo counterparts to pave way for the separation of northern Nigeria from the south. It later became a coup when circumstances impinged on the manifest motives of its plotters and participants.
