ABSTRACT

The skills required in dealing with psychological reality are perceptual and attentive. The role is that of Seer. OD people are good at it in unstructured situations. When a situation becomes very structured, OD people tend to become bored and switch off and their innate perception does not work in the same way. The primary psychological skill in the Seer is seeing through: knowing that there is a dissonance between what seems to be happening and what actually is going on psychologically. One psychological factor that seems related to the Seer is Mindfulness and Mindlessness, as spoken and written by Ellen Langer of Harvard Ed School. The Seer role corresponds to the meaningful behaviour because it relates to seeing through the obvious, and relating to content or meaning not structure. In psychological reality it is the Seer who is the realist and pragmatist: the business focused manager is the mystical wishful thinker.
