ABSTRACT

This chapter explains Halal, indicates that a product has been prepared according to Shariah principles using Shariah-compliant ingredients and processes. An Islamic product is one that inspires Muslims to be more Muslim, and one that is associated with a Muslim's ambitions, hopes and search for an identity in a time when such an identity proves elusive. In the Arabic language which is the language of the Quran, Sunnah and related Islamic literature the words used to describe the English terms products, commodities and goods are Taiyyibat, Rizq, Mataa, Zenah, Sel'ah and Bezaa'ah. These words, which are sometimes used interchangeably in studies pertaining to the Islamic economic system, are contextually and conceptually different to their counterparts in conventional marketing. However, Islamic scholars have categorized lawful or Taiyyibat products into four levels. These levels are Dharuriyyat, Hajiyyat, Kamaliyyat and Tarafiyyat which are Halal by nature but might be Haram by use.
