ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Heifetz's career for his repertoire and approach to programming. The Heifetz Collection furnished a total of 2,089 concert programmes and eighty-two radio transcripts. In addition, details of Heifetz's recording sessions were taken from a list of Heifetz's commercial recording sessions included in the RCA Jascha Heifetz Collection booklet. The Jascha Heifetz Collection at the Library of Congress contains almost all the necessary documents. The information demonstrates that the violinist spent an overwhelming amount of his time engaged in live performance, either in recital with piano, as soloist with orchestra, or on a smaller number of occasions in chamber music concerts. The comments provide fascinating reading in light of the data collected from the concert programmes while Judd overestimated the number of concerts; his description of Heifetz limiting his appearances 40 years after the debut is entirely in line with the data collected. Finally, the performance event data provides a unique insight into Heifetz's collaborations with other musicians.
