ABSTRACT

Bach's solo works formed an integral and significant part of Jascha Heifetz's repertoire, but it is possible to go even further, to state that of his entire repertoire, solo Bach as a set featured more often than any other piece or set of pieces. This provides further evidence of Auer's musical philosophy manifesting itself in Heifetz's career, since Auer believed that the solo works form the basis of every well-constructed violin programme. Heifetz more often performed part of a sonata or partita than an entire one, in contrast to many modern performers. Although the Chaconne and Prelude movements continue to feature in recital programmes, the other movements are now less often heard separated from their original setting. Aside from the Prelude performances, which have been dealt with separately, Heifetz programmed combinations of movements from the Partita in E major in seventeen individual performance events.
