ABSTRACT

The Pan-German Leagues history between 1918 and 1939 provides ample evidence of the significant political divisions that existed within the German Right. The League was one of the first radical nationalist organizations to reject categorically the Weimar Republic and to advocate an authoritarian government led by nationalist elites who would supposedly restore German honor and power in Europe. The Pan-German Leagues refusal to support Kapps assault on the government further illustrates the growing divide between right-wing forces even in the first years of the Weimar Republic. The surprisingly intense conflict between the Pan-German League, Erich Ludendorff, and the leaders of the German Vlkisch Freedom Party (DVFP) confirmed the general lack of political cooperation even among radical nationalist groups that seemed to share ideological goals.
