ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research which is designed to fill a significant gap in a sensitive issue and is focused on a particular community rather than generalizing about the British/Pakistani population. Hospitality is an integral part of the Pakistani community, taking tea and even dinner should be accepted when offered. The young people felt comfortable about being interviewed and regarded the researcher as an apna and part of the Pakistani community. The interviews were conducted at various locations including libraries, educational institutions and community centres. Some interviews were conducted outside on a bench while others were interviewed on a grass verge. The post-interview stage is often overlooked yet it is crucial in building trust between researchers and the community. Asian community centres tend to be used mainly by men and Pakistani women are often reluctant to attend unfamiliar or male-orientated surroundings. The Gatekeepers are often used to access tight-knit and closed communities.
