ABSTRACT

Most young people had high aspirations and the desire to succeed at school. There is an enormous amount of research on non-participation of young people in education and employment, most often linked to their socio-economic position. Some do not like schooling itself and others simply want to take time out and enjoy being young without the pressure of studying for exams and perhaps return later. For others parental and community pressure play an enormous part in the non-participation to the point that they have too many aspirations to achieve. The traditional expectations were pointed out on many occasions, they want people to get married, arranged have kids sons firstly, get a good job and earn lots of money and build houses in Pakistan. The results presented here show that, as in most communities, there can be cultural factors that can be equally or more important than ones socio-economic background.
