ABSTRACT

In November 2010, Unilever launched the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan. The plan outlines the company's goal to double the size of the business while reducing its environmental impact and increasing the positive social contribution which Unilever makes to society. Lifebuoy has now brought together decades of experience in running handwashing programmes, with the latest scientific research, to devise a methodology which aims to achieve sustained behaviour change. Lifebuoy was launched in 1894, William Levers goal being to help bring affordable hygiene to Victorian England at a time when epidemics of typhoid, smallpox, cholera and diphtheria were a constant threat. The Lifebuoy Swasthya Chetna programme reached over 130 million people from 50,000 rural villages in India by the end of 2009, making it the largest hygiene education campaign ever conducted. In the 1950s, the Fair Trade movement started in the US and in Europe as a partnership between non-profit importers as a way of alleviating poverty in poorer countries.
