ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses several reasons for Chopin to flee Paris and spend the winter of 183839 on the island of Mallorca. Most of them had to do with Baroness Amantine Lucile Aurore Dudevant, ne Dupin. One predicament was Chopin's hypersensitive notion of propriety and the desire to protect their reputations in Paris society. Quadrado deplored Sands virulent attacks on our beloved Balearic Island and wondered what could possibly cause the anger which induced such uncivil jokes and absurd reflexions. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic chronic disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system. The Royal Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa differed, in many respects, from the vast majority of Roman Catholic monasteries and abbeys. In Gothic fiction, nature and the elements always play a prominent role. One component puts the finishing touches on the Gothic setting at the Valldemossa monastery: frightening ghosts and nightmarish hallucinations.
