ABSTRACT

In no time I set off in a boat with Teniente de Navío Valdés to examine the watering place, which I found highly satisfactory. It was a small stream that ran down from the nearby mountains, 1 rendering the ground fertile on either side in a most pleasant way and ending up in a sort of pond, close to the beach, where an abundant supply of water made it possible to fill up our water casks and carry them on board with the help of the tide. The spot was nicely sheltered by the remains of an old quay. 2 On the bottom of the pond were many dressed stones and, all round to a fair distance, the area was full of celery and scurvy grass. 3 The rocks along the shore were invitingly full of shellfish, while ducks’ nests already with young, turned the site into a most attractive place.
