ABSTRACT

Just after nightfall, the senior sergeant of the garrison Don Antonio de Mata, 1 royal army engineer Don M. Olaguer, 2 and senior piloto of the royal navy Don José Moraleda, breveted alférez de fragata, 3 came on board by piragua 4 from the settlement. The first two, as well as presenting the compliments of the acting governor Coronel Francisco Garós, 5 carried out the health inspection. The third, who had been employed in surveying the coasts of this island for the past three years, was to hand over all his plans to us by order of His Excellency the Viceroy of Lima. The Viceroy had already in the previous November sent to the port an atlas of maps of these shores drawn up by Don Lázaro Ribera 6 to be handed over to me on my arrival together with a chart of the coastline of Peru from Chiloé to Lima, surveyed by Piloto Moraleda.
